YES we did it!!!

I can’t believe we did it! What an amazing weekend, what an experience!!! It was like to be on an emotional roll coaster during 2 days. I am so proud of my team, the girls fought like lions and the staff did a great job helping the players the best they could. We were a team, we were ONE and you could see it on the court.

During the all week, the girls practiced hard and prepared themselves to battle against strong opponents. We were not favorite in the tie but we had nothing to loose. On Thursday, we had our official dinner where both teams get introduced for the first time. Riverwoods is our new sponsor and we received amazing clothes. Made in Belgium and dressed to impressed !!! This was also the time for speeches, exchange of presents but also the moment for rookie speeches. It’s a tradition within the team; each new member has to say something during the official dinner but this time we were 5 to say something. Dieter, Laurence, Elise, Maryna and myself were new so we had to say something. As Captain I was the first to talk to everybody but I had a good introduction thanks to Ilie Nastase. A few minutes before, He told me he would never get married with me because I was not half of his age so I used this as my introduction to break the ice. But we, Ilie and me, got along very well until the matches started. We got divorced a few times during the matches but finally we did shake hands…

On Friday, we had the official draw ceremony at the hotel. Both teams were introduced to the press but the most important, we would finally know who had to play on the first day and who would play first. It was a big surprised for us all that the Romanian team didn’t choose their first player on Saturday. A tactic that finally didn’t work out thanks to the great fight of Kirsten and Yanina on Saturday. ceremonie-vrijdag

On Saturday and Sunday, the girls gave all they had and were fighting like they would die on the court. The fighting spirit and the fantastic atmosphere within the team made the difference at the end. They gave everything and they deserved to win. After that, it was time to celebrate but also time for the players to do what they wanted if we won: Put some make up on the 2 only men within the team… I am wondering what’s gonna happen next time we win 😉

See you all next time in Russia…But now, time for me to enjoy and most of all to recover for the next time 🙂

Fed Cup :work hard, play hard, have fun

We arrived saved and well in Bucarest where we stay for a week in total for our Fed Cup competition. We had a first practice to get a first impression of the surface and also of the stadium. It’s a nice and compact with seats in velor, something that you don’t see much these days… But what you defiantly don’t see anywhere is someone removing the hair of the tennis balls on the ground with a net. We are staying in a beautiful hotel, a bit old fashioned but classy and the food is perfect. The people from the organization are very nice and one of them is a tennis player from my generation. It’s nice to be back again and meet people I haven’t seen for a long time.

Today, we had our press conference with a lot of journalists but no one for Belgium. We just had 3 questions to answer and that was it. Not a very long press conference for the first time as captain, so we decided to bring some fun in this serious part with a crazy picture.

Tomorrow, we gonna have some more practice with the team. The girls are working very hard to get ready for the weekend. It’s gonna be a difficult meeting but I am very confident the way they play. We may not be favorite on paper, we have nothing to loose and the most important we are extremely motivated to win this meeting. Fingers crossed and most important nothing is impossible!

On Thursday, we have the traditional official dinner where both teams are introduced, the presidents make their official speeches but also the captains of each team. It means that I will have for the first time as captain the honor to speech in front of everybody. In Belgium, we have also a tradition. Each new member in the team has to speech and this time the Belgian team has 5 new members = 5 speeches. Hopefully, it won’t last forever ;-). Official dinner means also official dinner clothes. Our team is proud to have as official sponsor Riverwoods and we have received gorgeous clothes for this meeting. I can’t wait to share this with you in my next blog.

Next update: official draw ceremony on Friday.

Fed Cup 2017: Here we go

This is it! The moment I expected the most since a few months. I am back on track but this time as Fed Cup captain. I am so proud to become the new captain and being able to live again this amazing competition. I just loved so much to play for my country and Fed Cup was always an objective every season I played. It’s like a dream come true…

This Saturday we had our first practice with the team. Unfortunately, Elise had some problem at her leg and we didn’t want to take any risk before leaving to Romania. An-Sophie came instead so we could play some double and have already an idea which team could be a good choice. Double can be underestimate but can make the difference to win or loose the competition. The atmosphere was good, the players were relaxed and motivated for this new Fed Cup meeting.

First time together means also new members. Laurence Courtois becomes the new technical and my right arm; Dieter Calle, the stringer is joining our team also for the first time. Dieter is also in the Davis Cup team for many years and the girls asked to have him as well in the team. Elise and Maryna are playing for the first time in Fed Cup so we can really talk about a new team with a twist of experienced players such as Yanina and Kirsten.

New team and new outfit!!! Thanks to Kirsten, we received some pretty clothes from her new collection « Deux belges » cool outfit and very feminine which changes a lot compare to the one I used to wear in the past. The Belgian Fed Cup team will be for sure the coolest one on court :-). But not only on court because Riverwoods became our new sponsor for our official dinner and we will all look very classy. I will post more pictures in a few days when we will have our official dinner with the team.

Tomorrow we are flying form Charleroi to Bucharest and we will have our first practice on site in the afternoon. I keep you posted and will post more news on my blog during the week. I really hope we can reach the same results as the men from the Davis Cup team. I am sure all players are extremely motivated and willing to create sensation!!! Cheers
